Skins are alternative appearances available in various Rayman fan games, sometimes changing the playable character to a different one without altering anything other than their looks. Notable fan games with skins include Rayman Redemption and Rayman ReDesigner, featuring many costumes for Rayman, and different appearances for Bzzit and the checkpoints.

Rayman, Dark Rayman and Mr Dark are available as playable characters, although they're all counted as Rayman and behave exactly like him, thus being nothing more than skins.
However, their animations have some differences, such as Mr Dark transforming himself into his hat and shoes to crawl and shooting magic projectiles instead of a fist. Their projectiles also have unique sprites, including for the charged attacks, the Gold Fist, the Ice Fist and the Fire Fist.

Rayman is the default skin, while Dark Rayman is unlocked by completing the game's story, and Mr Dark is only available once every collectible has been obtained.

Many skins were added to the unofficial remake of Rayman 1 as a new feature, possibly as an homage to Rayman M and Rayman Arena, and list of heroes and costumes in UbiArt games. The player can thus pick different appearances for Rayman, Bzzit, and the checkpoints.

The skins have various unlocking criteria, or can be simply found in some areas which is mostly the case for Bzzit's skins. All of them can alternatively be unlocked by entering the "SKIN!WIZ" cheat code.

In the game's other settings, the player can activate or deactivate skin effects. These are purely cosmetic, altering the looks of Rayman's fist, most notably changing it to the corresponding laser-washing powders power when using their skins.
The skins are selected from their dedicated category in the pause menu.

Unlike Rayman, Bzzit doesn't have any skin which alters his projectiles.

Note that the checkpoint skins do not matter in Bzzit's levels as the Photographer appears without his photoboard.

In Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror

Rayman, Dark Rayman and Mr Dark are available as playable characters, although they're all counted as Rayman and behave exactly like him, thus being nothing more than skins. However, their animations have some differences, such as Mr Dark transforming himself into his hat and shoes to crawl and shooting magic projectiles instead of a fist. Their projectiles also have unique sprites, including for the charged attacks, the Gold Fist, the Ice Fist and the Fire Fist.

The player can select the skins from the Magician's bonus shop.

In Rayman Redemption

Many skins were added to the unofficial remake of Rayman 1 as a new feature, possibly as an homage to Rayman M and Arena, and the UbiArt games. The player can thus pick different appearances for Rayman, Bzzit, and the checkpoints. The skins have various unlocking criteria, or can be simply found in some areas which is mostly the case for Bzzit's skins. All of Rayman's skins can alternatively be unlocked by entering the "SKIN!WIZ" cheat code.

The skins are selected from their dedicated category in the pause menu. In the game's other settings, the player can activate or deactivate skin effects. These are purely cosmetic, altering the looks of Rayman's fist, including its golden variation, most notably changing it to the corresponding laser-washing powders power when using their skins. Unlike Rayman, Bzzit doesn't have any skin which alters his projectiles.

Note that the checkpoint skins do not matter in Bzzit's levels as the Photographer appears without his photoboard. In Demise mode, the Photographer disappears and his photoboards are blocked by some wooden planks, thus making the checkpoint skins barely visible or worth purchasing aside from completion purposes.

In Rayman ReDesigner

All the skins from Rayman Redemption return in Rayman ReDesigner, all of them being unlocked by default and also available to select from the main menu. However, skin effects can no longer be disabled.

A custom skin system for Rayman is implemented since version 1.1.0. Custom skins and fists can be created by players and added to the game through the custom folder as png files, and one can then be selected from the end of the skin list. Custom fists are selected automatically and thus their files shouldn't be renamed. User-made skins can be downloaded and shared through a dedicated section on Rayman Redistributor.

However, the skins based on the laser-washing powders from Rayman 3 are no longer selectable due to becoming gameplay features, behaving similarly to their official counterparts. On the other hand, they can be kept for an infinite duration when absorbing the power of a golden laser-washing powder, being permanent unless cancelled by a curse cleaner or by going through an exit, or by having their effects replaced by another laser-washing powder.

The appearance of the fist for the laser-washing powders was also refined, the Vortex gaining a wide green swirling aura, the Heavy Metal Fist obtaining the speed fist's particles, and the Shock Rocket having a thinner and more polished missile design. A brand new laser-washing powder was introduced to Rayman ReDesigner: the Super Jump, featuring purple and red colors, and a higher jump ability as an homage to the Power Jump Shoes from Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror. It uses a similar purple fist to the Throttle Copter, with less saturated colors.

The Robot Dinosaur mount has an alternative dark appearance which appears as a mount for Dark Rayman when he chases Rayman while the latter is riding the robotic Dinosaur, although it cannot be selected by the player as a skin. Dark Moskito also appears as Dark Rayman's ride when Rayman is riding Bzzit, and Dark Rayman himself will again change his appearance to his Game Boy Color skin should the player pick the Dark Rayman costume for Rayman.
