The Spider Master is a mini-boss in Rayman Redemption. It appears in Eat at Joe's, where it lurks in the dark caves, and comes out as soon as Rayman plugs Joe's power plug into its socket, bringing back the electricity. Apparently, the socket is located inside the Spider Master's lair. It is unknown whether the Spider Master had anything to do with cutting off Joe's power in the first place.

The Spider Master moves around the cave, hanging on a single thread of spider-web, and attacks Rayman either by extending its legs with sharp claws to the ground, one, two or three at a time, or by launching its fanged head, attempting to bite Rayman directly. It is during the head launch attack that Rayman can punch the head, damaging the Spider Master. The attack can be anticipated, as the Spider Master's growls and its eyes glow red briefly before the head is launched.

After being hit six times, the Spider Master retreats angrily into the darkness above, leaving behind an extra life. A rising platform appears that can carry Rayman out of the lair, so that he may continue on his journey.

Spider Master appears again in the True Boss Rush, featuring a black and red color palette and faster attacks.

Trivia

  • Spider Master was very different during Rayman Redemption's early development, featuring a more primitive limbless design, ten health points and spitting venom at Rayman, the latter's sprite remaining in the game's internal files. Its weak spot was its main body which Rayman could already hit more than once when vulnerable.[1]
  • Unlike eight-legged real-life spiders, the Spider Master only has six legs. This is a very common inaccuracy for spiders depicted in video games, as additional appendages complicate the sprites and graphical models.
  • It is possible to skip the Spider Master encounter in Eat at Joe's by entering the secret area featuring the Michel Ancel easter egg.
