Savage Minion is a reoccuring boss and the first major opponent faced by Rayman in Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror. He is a massive and very muscular Magic Minion, with a physique highly similar to the mad drummer, created by the Dark Magician as one of his strongest minions to guard Flint Jail.

In Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror

Grim Chains

Savage Minion is first encountered in Grim Chains's second part, during which he's harmless as he fell asleep on guard duty, forcing Rayman to find a way to get past his huge body blocking the way. Despite Betilla's advice to not wake him up, Rayman has no choice but to break a chain holding a wrecking ball to drop it on Savage Minion, thus waking him up off-screen and causing him to leave with an angry grunt and some loud stomping footsteps.

Savage Minion

Are you still at it? It really is foolish to come against me. One of my strongest minions is guarding the exit! He will crush you! If you don't die trying to get there, of course. Mehe he he he...

Rayman confronts Savage Minion in the last part of the eponymous final level of Flint Jail, the red colossus guarding the exit. Savage Minion attacks in various ways, such as jumping from one side of the arena to the other while causing rubble to fall on Rayman, stomping the ground with his fists to project purple clouds of dark magic, or launching three eggs birthing Magic Minions.

Savage Minion is impervious to Rayman's telescopic fist. However, whenever he lands after a jump, two pieces of rubble will fall, which Rayman can punch to throw them at Savage Minion, thus hurting the monster. While his health bar displays twenty points like every boss in Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror, any damage he sustains takes away four points from it, thus resulting in only five hits being required to defeat him. When vanquished, he shakes and explodes into red chunks falling out of the area, leaving five coins behind him.

If Savage Minion was already defeated once, the player can skip the battle by pressing the Enter key.

Savage Returns

Like Multi Minion, Savage Minion is encountered again in the Dark Stronghold, although it's unknown if he's the same Savage Minion encountered in Flint Jail or another specimen created by Dark Magician. He is fought in the final part of Savage Returns and behaves exactly as his Flint Jail counterpart, the arena also sharing the same shape, minus the spikes on the sides replaced by holes.

Trivia

  • Savage Minion is one of the few bosses alongside B.A.D Machine to have the exact same name as their dedicated level.
  • Savage Minion's voice uses edited grunts from Mr Stone.
  • There's an oversight in the Savage Returns encounter, as the pieces of rubble do not have their color adjusted to the Dark Stronghold's bricks and thus still appear to be from Flint Jail.
  • During Rayman Redemption's development, Savage Minion was intended to return in Dark Magician's Challenge and a few parts of its sprite were remade before being ultimately scrapped.
  • Due to some similar attacks and most of its textures being repurposed from the mad drummer, the latter can be used as a substitute for Savage Minion in Rayman ReDesigner.
