In Rayman Redemption

The Menace is the sixth main boss of Rayman Redemption, encountered in Playtopia, the new world. He is fought at the end of Brain Games.

The Menace is a unique boss, in that it starts as a single character, which splits into two in the middle of the battle. Rayman will have to defeat both to win. The Menace first appears as a green, monkey-like and alien-like creature, with a head, an open mouth, a long tongue, and oversized disconnected hands and feet like many characters in Rayman's world. Unlike most of them, though, the Menace lacks a torso and uses his head as his main body.

He attacks Rayman by spinning in the air until reaching a wall to cling to it, or standing in one corner and hurling blue bombs at Rayman once the Menace falls from the wall after being hit. The blue bombs are not only able to hurt Rayman directly, but if they explode in the center, wooden part of the platform, the surface under them breaks, creating gaps through which Rayman may fall into the green fluid below and die instantly. It is best, therefore, for Rayman to stay close to the corners, where the metal plating prevents the platform from breaking.

The only way to damage the Menace is to punch him when he clings to a wall. After taking three hits, the Menace spins towards the center of the arena and splits into two - his red twin looks exactly like him, except with a smaller tongue and an angry, rather than playful, grin. The red twin's attack patterns are similar, except his bombs are yellow. These yellow bombs do not destroy the platform, but instead explode into two horizontally flying flames that can damage Rayman on either side of the explosion, unless he prudently jumps over them.

The remaining six hit points are split between the green and red Menace equally - once either of them takes three hits, he will drop to the ground and remain inactive for the rest of the battle. Once both of them fall, the battle is won.

The second hybrid of the Dark Chimera features parts of the green Menace mixed to Space Mama and Mr Skops, using the Menace's spin attack to cling to a wall where it can shoot a laser from the rolling pin while also generating a vertical space pot. It takes four hits to defeat it before it moves on to its next amalgamation.

In the True Boss Rush, the Menace has different colors and throws two bombs instead of one in both of his forms. Curiously, the second Menace's tongue has the same bigger shape as the green one's during this challenge. The Dark Chimera mixture of the Menace features the same altered colors in True Boss Rush and it instead spawns two diagonal space pots when attacking.

Achievements

  • Defeating the Menace grants the Playtime is Over achievement.

In Rayman ReDesigner

The green Menace returns in Rayman ReDesigner as the Menace Bomber, implemented in version 1.4.0 and available from the second page of the enemies tab, and can be flipped or linked to events.

It is a stationary enemy who throws blue bombs at Rayman. The bombs can destroy both breakable walls and reinforced walls as well as boulders and mossy boulders, but completely go through most other obstacle objects such as horizontal and vertical blockers. Due to its nature as a stationary entity, placing a Menace Bomber in the air will result in it floating, as if standing on an invisible surface, and his bombs cannot go below him.

Rayman, Bzzit or the Dinosaur must hit it him twenty times to take him down, while Rayman attacking from the air or with a Golden Fist from the ground only requires seven punches. Attacking while jumping or with a charged fist makes it possible to defeat the Menace with just four hits if Rayman has a golden fist, while two hits of the Heavy Metal Fist are enough, no matter how Rayman performs his attacks. Just as with most other enemies, Rayman can defeat the Menace instantly by making physical contact with either the Invincibility power-up or with the robot dinosaur.

Trivia

  • The Menace has a unique theme, called A Couple of Troublemakers[2], which is featured both in Rayman Redemption and as a selectable track in Rayman ReDesigner.
  • It is the only main boss in Rayman Redemption whose name isn't featured in its level's title. It is also the only main boss who doesn't appear in any way before its fight. Ironically, the Chessmaster, the mini-boss of Playtopia, does have his name featured in his level's title, and his existence if first hinted by the master door in Brain Games.
  • Just as many things in Playtopia, The Menace's boss battle was very different in Rayman Redemption's early production[3]. The arena had ropes, looked different with green stains splattered on its surfaces and didn't feature any water, while the Menace had a different pose and appearance lacking his big tongue when standing still and had seven health points. The Menace used different attacks by belching out some green venom at Rayman using the Flower tentacle's official spitting sound effects, vomiting a pool of it after being hit once which required Rayman to hang on to a rope, before the Menace would then spit more venom above the rope where Rayman is hung. The Menace would explode and split in two after three hits and both twins shared the red appearance, making them appear identical. The Menace had an attack sequence in both of his phases by doing his spin attack continously for a while which wouldn't be interrupted by walls or the ground. This was all changed due to the difficulty of this original fight.
  • If a piece of the platform's middle is left intact while its edges are destroyed by the bombs, it will appear to float in the air despite nothing supporting the remaining plank of wood.
  • Just as the world Playtopia is not based on an existing world from Rayman 1, so is the Menace a new boss, and not a character returning from the original game.
  • This is one of the few boss battles in the game, where Rayman can suffer instantaneous death by falling off the platform into a harmful fluid.
  • Taking into account The Menace's colors in the True Boss Rush, this boss wears the four main colors of Playtopia and of the toykeys, being green, red, blue and yellow.
  • The Menace is referred to as Pest internally in the game's files, and its appearance as an hybrid in the battle with the Dark Chimera is named Pestmama, adding Space Mama to its name while ignoring Mr Skops's parts in the amalgamation.
  • Despite the final Menace not using his burping sounds from the early development, the sound file used for the Tentacle flower's last belch is called "sndPestBurb", as if still belonging to the Menace.
