Cage
- This article is about the item's role in Rayman fan games. For the object in official games, see cages.
Cages are breakable objects which contain captive creatures such as Electoons, who have been jailed within by enemy groups, such as Mr Dark and his minions. Cages are a common key gameplay element in most games where they appear, such as Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror, or Rayman Redemption.

In Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror
The cages return in Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror with their appearance from Rayman 1, containing the captured Electoons and sharing the same appearance and main purpose. There are six cages in every level excluding bonuses, hubs and Dark Storm, the latter being only unlocked if Rayman freed all the Electoons from the game's 186 cages. The Electoons do not remain in the level when they exit a cage, and instead quickly shoot up in the sky, similarly to Rayman's original death animation.
In this game, the Electoon medallion only appears in the worlds' hubs, the number of their happy faces matching the quantity of cages broken within a level. Tiny versions of them are displayed for every world's levels on the Dark Stronghold's roof. Exclusively in this game, medallions do not show a big Electoon face when completed, but turn pink instead. The total number of broken cages is also displayed all the time on the bottom-right corner of the hud.

Backtracking will often be required to find some missing cages, as Rayman will encounter many situations where they are blocked behind a green cloud or a blue switch requiring the space key, and they can also be hidden behind some gendoors. To make the task easier, Rayman can purchase an cage detector from the Magician's shop, which will add a green arrow to the hud, glowing when there's a remaining cage and pointing towards its direction.
Unlike the original Rayman, cages do not actually disappear from levels once they've broken, but are instead replaced by golden cages which reappear every time Rayman returns to a past level or loses a life within the same section. Opening these golden ones will instead award four Tings and a coin.
Two collectible in the game are made of cage parts: Red Alarm's collectible resembles a cage padlock while the collectible found in the Pascal level appears to be a pile of broken cages' plates. Decorative cages are also seen hung from the ceiling in one of Flint Jail's backgrounds, and that same world shares many common themes with cages and the notion of imprisonment.

When Rayman reaches the roof of the Dark Stronghold after the Dark Magician's defeat, the Magician will tell him to gather all the Electoons to confront the ever-growing Dark Storm. Once Rayman has broken open all the cages, the path to Dark Storm will be opened by a series of clouds.
In Rayman Redemption
As Rayman Redemption is a remake of Rayman 1, cages return to the game with few differences, also retaining some changes and additions from Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror. Due to the expanded content, the total of cages has been increased from 102 to 168. Most returning cages are located at their original spots from most versions of Rayman, while a few were moved to different locations.
This time, cages aren't mandatory for progression any more, instead unlocking Dark Legacy and being used to earn extra life points in Betilla's Garden and earn some bonus rewards such as achievements. The fourth health point is awarded by Betilla for 10 cages, the fifth one requires 50, the sixth needs 120, while the seventh one ultimately necessitates all of the 168 cages. Betilla will then simply congratulate Rayman for rescuing the Electoons should he return to her garden afterwards.
Once again, most levels contain six cages, with the exception of the Lonely Cliff, the End of the World, the Final Challenge, and extra areas including nearly all of the Magician's Challenges, where none are found. Uniquely, the Dark Magician's Challenge contains ten cages, although none of them are taken account into the game's completion and they'll reappear every time the challenge is reattempted. In the Dark Magician's Challenge, freeing the Electoons will instead break the magic wall as a reference to Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror, which will open the path to an extra area where Rayman will meet the Dark Magician and earn the Dark Magician Rayman skin. The decorative cages also return in the background of Dark Magician's Challenge, and platforms similar to the cages' metallic plates are also encountered there.

Breaking cages is similar to Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror as the Electoons will immediately fly away, and the broken ones will be subsequently replaced by golden variants once Rayman returns to a stage. This time, golden cages will earn Rayman 8 Tings, which will magnetize to him similarly to those awarded by rainbow Tings.

The medallions return from the original game both on the world map and in levels, but no longer interrupt the action when breaking cages and are replaced by tinier counterparts appearing briefly on the hud's bottom-right corner. The medallion's current progress can also be tracked from the pause menu in levels, and will be replaced by a counter of all of the game's broken cages if the pause menu is open from the world map and some extra locations such as shops. When all the Electoons and collectibles are obtained within a level, the medallion's usual pink Electoon face will turn golden on the world map.
Rayman can purchase the cage locator at Joe's Wares for 1 500 Tings, being extremely similar to its counterpart from Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror. The arrow is pink and appears around Rayman this time, pointing towards the closest cage and changing its glowing details depending on how far it is from the player.

Achievements
- Unlocking all of Betilla’s HP upgrades through the cages grants the Betilla’s Blessing achievement.
- Freeing all the Electoons from the 168 cages grants the Electoon Hero achievement.
In Rayman ReDesigner
Cages return in Rayman ReDesigner from Rayman Redemption, functioning almost identically and being available from the editor's items tab. The default levels contain a few of them: Pink Plant Woods features 6 cages, Curse Chaos contains 2, while They Came From Outer Space! and Mr. Skops' Revenge contain none. However, custom levels can contain any number of cages desired by the player, and the total will be displayed when starting a level and from the pause menu.
Gold cages and the medallions are absent from this game, so broken cages will remain as a decorative metallic plate when returning to a section, as the original Rayman. The cage locator returned as an optional setting since version 1.4.0, working exactly as it did in Rayman Redemption.
Cages can now be assigned to gendoors or killdoors to make them either appear or disappear. Breaking the cages has no point in Rayman ReDesigner aside from scoring purposes, as they're displayed on the results screen alongside gifts and Magician tokens. However, since version 1.4.0, magic walls can be broken by being given a specific cage requirement similarly to the Dark Magician's Challenge, which will be displayed if the player chooses to activate this new feature.
The decorative cages attached to chains return through the selectable Flint Jail background from Rayman Redemption's Dark Magician's Challenge, and so do the jail platforms.
Trivia
- Just as most other assets in Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror, the internal name of the cages is a Finnish word, being "vankila".
- The golden cages in Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror and Rayman Redemption are possibly a nod to the cages' appearance in the Game Boy Color version of Rayman and Rayman 2 Forever, being golden and seemingly empty.
- Despite being missing from Rayman ReDesigner, the gold cages are actually still present in the game's files as a leftover from Rayman Redemption.
- In Rayman ReDesigner's version 0.1.0, cages would remain collected in test mode, which was quickly patched in version 0.1.1.
- Cages didn't properly react to bouncy tiles in Rayman ReDesigner prior to version 1.2.0.
- It was possible to break cages at the frames they spawned in Rayman ReDesigner, even if already collected. This was fixed in version 1.3.0.
- Prior to being fixed in Rayman ReDesigner's version 1.4.4, the cage locator could still point at already broken cages.
