Reaper

Reaper is the eighth boss of Rayman: The Dark Magician's Reign of Terror. He's the ghost king of the Brutal Burialground, hiding his visage behind a plague doctor mask and a dark hat, and wielding a scythe.

The Reaper is first encountered in the second part of Castle of the Ghosts, appearing without any warning to sneakily attack Rayman. Throughout this section, Reaper will attack by materializing next to Rayman to slash him with his scythe, repeating the assault about every ten seconds.

Rayman finally talks to Reaper in the final part, but the ghost king says that while he could let the hero pass, the Dark Magician tasked him to take down Rayman, thus beginning his fight. The Reaper will attack repetitively by teleporting behind Rayman to slash him, doing so five times in a row. Subsequently, six tall flames will burst from the cracks on the ground, and Reaper will remain still in the air, becoming vulnerable to damage.

Like every other boss in the game, the Reaper has a health bar of twenty points, but he has actually seven health points in total as any hit reduces it by three points. After getting hurt three times, the Reaper's flames will spit fire balls upwards endlessly, making it impossible to jump between them without taking damage. During the whole confrontation, Rayman can avoid taking any damage by staying clear of the cracks and remaining in crawling position, as the Reaper's scythe cannot reach him this way. A Simple Power can be found in the right corner of the area to further facilitate the challenge.

After seven successful hits, the ghost king vanishes, leaving five coins behind. The Reaper will reappear if Rayman later returns to the Castle of the Ghosts, but the player can skip the boss battle by pressing the Enter key.

The Reaper is mentionned a final time by the Dark Magician when entering the Fiery Fort, baffled at Rayman's survival and blaming himself for trusting a ghost.

Trivia

• Reaper's hat is repurposed from Mr Dark's, being the same but recolored black. It may be an intentional in-universe choice, as the Reaper was originally intended to have some connection to Mr Dark.
• Reaper is the only boss with an insufficient health bar, as only two points are displayed on his final health point, when he usually loses three whenever being hit.
• Reaper's behavior of attacking Rayman with teleportation attacks before his boss battle is shared with the Dark Magician, acting similarly in some areas of the Dark Stronghold.
• There's an homage to the Reaper in the game Scoop Kick! also created by Ryemanni, through the final level of the bonus world Brutal Burial Ground called "The Pear Reaper". The boss enemies of this tribute world are pears wearing a similar mask to the Reaper, and also wielding a scythe when turned into ghosts to hunt down the player.
